What's New?

December 2011

This quarter has been extremely difficult, but oddly fun. I feel like I have a project due every day and finals are just around the corner. My final project for CS 122B (Projects in Databases and Web Applications) was to create an Android app that presents questions to the user in the form of a quiz. It sounds easy but there was a small problem; I have been so content with my iPhone, I have never used an Android device for more than a couple minutes. Thankfully, my friend let me have one of his old Android phones and I immediately got to work. It's not currently ready to be in the app store, but you can download my MovieQuiz app if you want to check it out.

Over the summer I started working on a project for a coding competition called ICS Summer Of Code. I had no idea what I was going to write but I knew it couldn't be a tiny project, but I only had 2 months to complete it. I decided a game would be fun since I haven't written a lot of games in the past, and it would yield some graphics experience. I chose Java since I am most comfortable with it and time could be an issue. My final product is a two player, turn based strategy game called Basic Wars which you can download on Git Hub.

Jamaica was awesome! Thank you family/friends for all your support. We are already planning next year's trip. After a full 10 days I could write a full paper about the trip, so instead I'll give you a summary. Our team split up into two groups: half of us put on a VBS for the kids and the other half worked on fixing homes. The kids are so full of joy, it's inspiring. I see their living conditions and think no kid in America would live like this and be happy. Yet the children here smile, give thanks, offer to help us.

The housing was a similar story. If you've ever been to Mexico (not the tourist cities), you know what poor living conditions look like. The home we worked on was comparable to a cheap American garage: aluminum roof with holes in it, thin walls with cracks, the door didn't close properly, and essentially no protection from the outside elements so there was dirt everywhere. We patched up the roof, reinforced the walls, put in new glass for the windows, and added a nice thick door with a lock and key. The family was very grateful and we all celebrated with their church on our last day of the trip (which is a story in itself considering a church service lasts all day in Jamaica).

Good news! I have raised enough money for the Jamaica mission trip this summer. Thank you for all your support, whether it was donations or prayers. I look forward to leaving in August and it's approaching very quickly. Where does that leave my Tech Support service? I'm not sure to be honest. I am taking a couple classes this summer and still working so I can try and help out in the little free time I have. Just ask.

March 2011

I am starting a tech support service to help fund my mission trip to Jamaica. You can find out more information on the Facebook event, but the idea is that I want to help you with whatever computer issues you are having for a small fee. Whatever amount you feel is appropriate for the service you are asking is probably reasonable. Remember that all the money goes directly to the expenses for Jamaica mission trip for stuff like air fare, food, and supplies to rebuild homes.

Do you have questions? I have answers (they may not be correct, but I have them). Contact me using this form. If you wish for me to reply, please provide your email address.

You may have noticed pages with a grim reaper on them claiming I have been hacked. The host I was using was compromised and all index.php pages were replaced with a grim reaper. I didn't have recent backups of some of my pages and asked my hosting provider if they could revert the changes. They never did. After opening many support tickets and TYPING IN ALL CAPS, I gave up and switched hosts. Luckily for me, I did not register my domain through them so it was a quick switch. I did however lose some files so I am working on restoring everything. Whatever you do, do not use TracSpace. Horrible support, very slow, they don't even have a phone number, UPDATE and it appears they went out of business anyway. Their site is down.
